Decication for Oregon Sailor Lost at Sea
U.S.S. FRANK E. EVANS
July 8, 2017 - 2:00 p.m.
American Legion Post 21 has been selected by the Frank E. Evans Association to place a monument in the Memorial Rose Garden, specifficaly Radarman Second Class, Garry Bradbuy Hodgon from Oregon.
A special commemoration to the Crew who sailed with her on that fateful morning, June 3, 1969 when USS Frank E. Evans collided with the Australian Aircraft Carrier HMAS Melbourne and was cut in half. The forward section of the USS Frank E. Evans sank in 1100 fathoms of water within two minutes. Seventy-four lives were lost as a result of the collision and subsequent sinking of aft section of the Frank E. Evans.
It is such an honor to place the Memorial for Gary in our Rose Garden, most don't know that none of the 74 men who were lost during the sinking of the USS Evans during the Vietnam War are recognized on the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C. The Frank E. Evans Association for many years has been, and still is lobbying in Washington D.C to have these 74 names added to the wall. In the interim The Evans Association has taken it upon themselves to place a Memorial in each State where a Sailor was lost
In addition to the Dedication all Veterans present that served during the Vietnam War will be offered "The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration" lapel pin as a lasting memento of the nation's thanks for their service.
